This photo was taken near Monticello, UT as the moon was setting just before sunrise on August 31, 2023. This was a Blue Supermoon, a pretty rare event. If you missed it, you'll have to wait until January 2037 to see it the next time it happens.
A full moon happens every 28 days, or thereabouts. It's rare that two full moons happen in one month, but it happens occasionally. When it does, it's called a Blue Moon. This was one of those occasions.
The "Supermoon" is another thing that doesn't happen all that often.
Have you ever noticed that sometimes the moon looks REALLY, REALLY BIG? It's because the moon's orbit takes it closer to the earth at those times. A "Supermoon" happens when the moon is within 90% of the closest distance it gets to Earth.
On this early morning, the moon was both of those things. A Blue Supermoon.
See you in 2037.
