Iceplant (Carpobrotus edulis) is a coastal shrub native to South Africa that was introduced to California in the early 1900's as an erosion stabilization tool. It's beautiful and still available and in wide use today as a hardy ground cover, but it thrives on beaches to the point of choking out other native species.
