The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad runs between Chama, NM and Antonito, CO on a narrow-gauge track that meanders through the mountains and valleys of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. It was originally constructed in 1880 to serve the silver mining districts in southwestern Colorado. When the Rio Grande Railway upgraded the rest of its tracks to the now-standard wider gauge, it was not considered cost-effective to upgrade this portion of the line.
In 1969, it was officially abandoned by Rio Grande, but a group of railroad conservationists renovated the line, and it was purchased jointly by the states of New Mexico and Colorado in 1970. Since that time, it has been operated as a tourist line, running from about the end of May until late October every year.
Late September and October is a prime time to visit, as the fall colors are exploding about then.
